Grand Knights Lauded During Banquet Here

Rev. T. J. Brennan, S.T.L., pastor of St. Joseph's Church,
Hon. Edward Molkenbuhr, supreme director, Toastmaster Walter A. Chowen,
and Past Supreme Warden David F. Supple of the Knights of Columbus,
exchange greetings at the banquet honoring 35 past grand knights and
35 years of accomplishment by the order in Berkeley. --Gazette photo.
[article (by Arthur Wendering)]
__ A gathering of 100 Knights of Columbus and their ladies heard the past grand knights of Berkeley Council No. 1499 lauded for their accomplishment during the past 35 years by Supreme Director Hon. Edward Molkenbuhr, municipal judge of San Francisco and others, at a dinner held at the Hotel Shattuck last evening.
__ Walter A. Chowen, past grand knight and past district deputy supreme knight, paid a tribute to the women present and to the late Col. Neal Power, institutor of Berkeley Council, and wearer of the Croix de Guerre, for the foundation he laid 35 years ago, which it was said had come to excellent fruition.
__ Besides the usual work of Catholic activity in which Berkeley Council was said to have been a leader, it was pointed out that the local Knights of Columbus maintain a civilian blood bank at Alta Bates Hospital, and a hospital guarantee fund at Providence Hospital, Oakland.
__ War work in two wars; halting through the board of regents of questioned lectures on sex before mixed classes of the University of California; aid in the bus transportation of all school children, release time religious education; substantial contributions to the national Catholic Hour radio program, and the Catholic University at Washington, D. C.; aid to the Retreat Association; and leadership in Boy Scout activities and in parish work, were declared to evidence a glorious past and to point to a fruitful future by Judge Molkenbuhr. Maintenance of Knights of Columbus children's playground in Rome was declared by the speaker to have cost over a million dollars.
__ Grand Knight James Kaney opened the program and with his committee provided entertaining musical numbers.
