FAMOUS BAND DRAWS CROWDS TO IDORA PARK
---
Philip Pelz, the famous band leader and composer, made his initial bow in the bay region at Idora park yesterday, and was received with enthusiasm by a big crown who listened with keen delight to his splendid band.
Pelz, who is a Russian, boasts an international band with instrumentalists from every European country, and several Americans to leaven the mixture. Despite the fact that their brothers are warring with each other at home, the bandsmen work together harmoniously, and pass the war extras around during the intermission.
Pelz himself has an international reputation. He has been honored by almost all the crowned heads of Europe, having been signally honored by the Emperor of Germany and the Czar Nicholas. Pelz was with the Russian army in the Russo-Japanese war, and was in the battle of Mukden and the siege of Port Arthur. He started the campaign with 65 musicians in the band, and finished with only 15.
The concert yesterday included some beautiful selections, and these were superbly played. There were also popular ballads and a little ragtime.
Under the auspices of the Knights of Columbus, Discovery day was celebrated yesterday at Idora park, and the celebration will continue this afternoon and tonight. Pelz and his band will be at the park all this week.

REPORT MADE ON INVESTIGATION OF FRATERNAL BODY
---
At the meeting of the Berkeley Council of the Knights of Columbus held last night, a remarkable tribute to the patriotism and religious spirit of the Knights of Columbus on the part of the highest Masonic officials in California, was held before the council.
The action which led to the issuance of this document was taken by Judge Paul McCormick of Los Angeles, State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus in California, under authority of the Supreme Board of Directors of the United States. The action consisted in the submitting to the judgement of the Masonic officials of all the ritualistic and secret works of the Knights of Columbus.
The following statement issued by the Masonic officers who investigated the matter was read at the meeting:
"We hereby certify that by authority of the highest officer of the Knights of Columbus in the State of California, who acted under instructions from the supreme officer of the Order of the United States, we were furnished a complete copy of all the work, ceremonies and pledges used by the order, and that we carefully read, discussed and examined the same. We found that while the order is in a sense a secret association, it is not an oath-bound organization, and that its ceremonies are comprised in four degrees, which are intended to teach and inculcate principles that lie at the foundation of every great religion and every free state.
"Our examination of these ceremonials and obligations was made primarily for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not a certain alleged oath of the Knights of Columbus, which has been printed and widely circulated, was in fact used by the Order, and whether, if it was not used, any oath, obligation or pledge was used which was not or would be offensive to Protestants or Masons, or those who are engaged in circulating a document of peculiar visciousness and wickedness.
"We find that neither the alleged oath nor any oath or pledge bearing the remotest resemblance thereto in matter, manner, spirit, or purpose is used or forms a part of the ceremonies of any degree of the Knights of Columbus. The alleged oath is scurrilous, wicked and libelous and must be the invention of an umpious and venomous mind.
"We find that the Order of the Knights of Columbus, as shown by its rituals, is dedicated to the Catholic religion, charity and patriotism. There is no propaganda proposed or taught against Protestants or Masons or persons not of the Catholic faith. Indeed Protestants and Masons are not referred to directly or indirectly in the ceremonials and pledges. The ceremonials of the Order teaches a high and noble patriotism, instills a love of country, inculcates a reverence for law and order, urges the conscientious and unselfish performance of civic duty and holds up the Constitution of our country as the richest and most precious possession of a Knight of the Order. We can find nothing in the entire ceremonials of the Order that to our minds could be objected to by any person.
"Motley Hewes Flint, 33rd Degree, Past Grand Master of Masons of Cal.
"Dana Reid Weller, 32nd Degree, Past Grand Master of Masons of Cal.
"Wm. Rhodes Hervey, 33rd Degree, Past Master and Master of Scottish Rite Lodge.
"Samuel E. Burke, 32nd Degree, Past Master and Inspector of Masonic Districts."
