Before the regular business of the meeting was taken
up President Gaines welcomed the "stockholders" of the City to
whom he had sent special invitations to attend the meeting in
order to afford them an opportunity to see how the procedure
of the Board of Directors operates.
He first introduced the members of the Council to the
"stockholders" and then they in turn were introduced to the
Council.

President Gaines stated the meeting was called to
consider the petition of the Knights of Columbus Hall
Association of Berkeley requesting the reclassification of the
property at the northwest corner of University Avenue and Milvia
Street from Class II to Class VIII, under Ordinance No. 2180-N.S.,
which was laid on the table at the last meeting, also,
to consider the revision of the budget for the balance of the
fiscal year.

City Manager Fisk stated that the resolution accepting
the deed conveying certain real property for street and
highway purposes had been prepared and he was ready to present
it after they had taken action on the rezoning.
Councilman Martin moved that the matter be taken off
the table.
The motion was seconded by Councilman Herrick and
adopted. Councilman Berg voting "no".
On motion of Councilman Berg, seconded by Councilman
Hoyt, a Bill was passed to print reclassifying the property as
requested, provided the Knights of Columbus Hall Association
deed to the City certain described property for street purposes
so that the corner can be rounded off and that they pay the
cost, not to exceed $100, for moving the electrolier at this
corner.
City Manager Fisk, thereupon, presented the resolution
accepting the deed from the Association for street and highway
purposes.
On motion of Councilman Martin, seconded by Councilman
Herrick, the resolution was adopted by unanimous vote.

The following contains a list of members who served
in World War One. There had to have been other members
who remained at home unable to participate in this
particular way, and therefore are not yet identified.
This is real progress in identifying early Council members.

declared war against Germany in April, 1917,
the Knights of Columbus, through their Supreme
Board of Directors, passed the following resolution:
"The Supreme Board of Directors of the Knights
of Columbus, at a regular meeting, held the 14th
day of April, 1917, in the City of Washington,
realizing that the crisis confronting our country
calls for the active co-operation and patriotic zeal
of every true citizen, hereby reaffirms the devotion
of 400,000 members of the Order in this country
to our Republic and its laws, and pledges their
continued and unconditional support to the
President and the Congress of the Nation, in their
determination to protect its honor and its ideals
of humanity and right." In keeping with the spirit
of this resolution the Knights of Columbus offered
the services of the Order as a unit to the Government
in war work. An appeal was issued to the
public for $1,000,000 for this purpose and an
assessment of $2.00 per capita levied against its
membership. In time the war fund in response to this
appeal far exceeded the expectations of the Knights,
amounting in the end to something over $14,000,000.
Later on the Knights of Columbus participated
in the fund from the general "drive" made jointly
by the seven officially recognized welfare organizations
doing war work, its share, out of $170,000,000,
being $30,000,000, which in turn was shared with the
National Catholic War Council. The first task
was the establishment of a Knights of Columbus
service in the United States and its insular possessions.
Secretaries and chaplains were placed in all
the camps and cantonments; buildings were erected
and community centers were established. In all
260 buildings were erected, 1134 secretaries were
placed, and 309 camps were operated. Headquarters
were established in Paris for the Order's overseas
activities, with branches in London covering
the British Isles, and after the Armistice in
Coblenz, for the Army of Occupation. The number

Designed in an architectural style more familiar in New England,
the building was originally used as a warehouse.
At one time there was a second floor hall where the
American Legion,
Knights of Columbus,
Knights of Pithias and the Daughters of the Golden West met.
The building has been used as office space since the depression.

the above-described red brick building is currently occupied by Rubicon.
It happens to be just one block north of another meeting hall
