Students Get Booklet On Banner
---
A brochure, "How to Display and Respect Our Flag," is being distributed in Oakland Diocesan grammar and high schools through the efforts of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

"It is the intent of all taking part in this project that the knowledge of the proper respect and love of the flag will help to instill the virtue of patriotism in these students and their families," a K of C spokesman said.

Some 30,000 brochures are being circulated. The Knights of Columbus notes that Flag Day will be observed next Sunday.

The organization spokesman said it hopes the brochure will help enable the students "to overcome the feelings of hate and violence that are being demonstrated by their immediate elders -- the college-aged students ..."

Would-Be Centennial for Historic, Vanished Newman Hall
---
[...]
A fundraising publication for a building campaign in the 1960s noted "immediate need ... for a new Chapel," and a lecture hall, classrooms, "service area, administrative area, dining area." The old Newman only sat 260 in chapel while, "at each Mass over 400 students must try to get in."

Other rooms were also undersized and "many students do not even come because they know they won’t find room." "The original Newman Hall provides no actual classrooms" and more space was needed beyond the old parish house for the "three full-time priests."

"Now we found that the increased number of students cannot be served adequately in our present facilities," wrote Father Quinan in the appeal, "After many prayers and much deliberation, the decision has been made ... Newman Hall must build."

There was another impetus for new facilities. In the 1950s the University was projecting the acquisition of a large amount of "off-campus" property including the entire block where Newman Hall stood.

The Regents bought the old Beta fraternity house and Cloyne Court (then re-leased it for co-operative housing use) and began negotiating for Newman property that included the Hall, Rectory, and two parking lots, one on the block and one across the street. UC's Long Range Development Plans assigned the block for "Engineering Unit 2," which would follow Unit 1, now Etcheverry Hall.

Newman Hall relocated to the south campus at Dwight and College, where three old Berkeley buildings were torn down with volunteer labor from the Knights of Columbus to provide a site for the current concrete edifice.

Designed by Mario Ciampi--soon also to be the architect of the University Art Museum--the new building was first used on April 2, 1967, with a "folk mass" and 1,000 in attendance. The new Newman also became its own full-fledged parish, carved out of the St. Joseph’s territory. A more than century old local institution, it is still administered by the Paulist Fathers.

The old Newman building apparently didn't last long after University acquisition. One record indicates demolition in March 1968. Several people who lived in Berkeley in the 1960s tell me the building was definitely gone by the end of the decade.

exchange greetings at the banquet honoring 35 past grand knights and
35 years of accomplishment by the order in Berkeley. --Gazette photo.
[article (by Arthur Wendering)]
__ A gathering of 100 Knights of Columbus and their ladies heard the past grand knights of Berkeley Council No. 1499 lauded for their accomplishment during the past 35 years by Supreme Director Hon. Edward Molkenbuhr, municipal judge of San Francisco and others, at a dinner held at the Hotel Shattuck last evening.
__ Walter A. Chowen, past grand knight and past district deputy supreme knight, paid a tribute to the women present and to the late Col. Neal Power, institutor of Berkeley Council, and wearer of the Croix de Guerre, for the foundation he laid 35 years ago, which it was said had come to excellent fruition.
__ Besides the usual work of Catholic activity in which Berkeley Council was said to have been a leader, it was pointed out that the local Knights of Columbus maintain a civilian blood bank at Alta Bates Hospital, and a hospital guarantee fund at Providence Hospital, Oakland.
__ War work in two wars; halting through the board of regents of questioned lectures on sex before mixed classes of the University of California; aid in the bus transportation of all school children, release time religious education; substantial contributions to the national Catholic Hour radio program, and the Catholic University at Washington, D. C.; aid to the Retreat Association; and leadership in Boy Scout activities and in parish work, were declared to evidence a glorious past and to point to a fruitful future by Judge Molkenbuhr. Maintenance of Knights of Columbus children's playground in Rome was declared by the speaker to have cost over a million dollars.
__ Grand Knight James Kaney opened the program and with his committee provided entertaining musical numbers.
