BERKELEY COUNCIL 1499

Berkeley Council 1499 was instituted on Sunday, November 6, 1910 at
St. Joseph's Church, Berkeley. Gleaned from the monthly record of St.
Joseph's Church (which was founded in 1879) as read from the pen of
Father F. X. Morrison, Pastor and First Chaplain: "We have been looking
forward to this event for the last few years, we consider it an epic in the
life of the Church in the City."

"The Knights of Columbus now constitues [sic] the largest catholic organi-
zation in the country." It is of great interest that one of the members of
this Council, Ernest H. Woodfeldt, Grand Knight, 1930-31, was State
Deputy in 1943 and he has an Assembly in Contra Costa County named
for him which was instituted on April 18, 1953. One of the members
served the Junipero Serra province 4th Degree for three terms, 1932-1938.
Robert Emmet Roony [sic] has the oldest assembly in the jurisdiction named
for him, formerly Serra, which was founded on October 6, 1913.
